Overview

South Africa offers some of the best universities in Africa. In fact, the University of Cape Town, the University of the Witwatersrand, the University of KwaZulu-Natal and the University of Pretoria rank among the top 500 universities worldwide. There are currently 23 public tertiary education institutions in South Africa that offer a range of study and research options.

The higher education system in South Africa was restructured in 2004. Universities and technikons were merged into larger institutions, all of which are now known as universities. The restructuring brought about three types of universities. Traditional universities offers theoretically-oriented university degrees, universities of technology offer more practically-oriented diplomas and degrees in technical fields, while comprehensive universities offer a combination of both types of qualification.
