Overview

South Africa has a wide range of unique indigenous flora. To preserve the country's flora, nine national botanical gardens were established. The national botanical gardens are situated throughout the country in five of South Africa's nine different biomes.

The parks are managed by the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI). SANBI was established on 1 September 2004 through the National Environmental Management Biodiversity Act 10 of 2004.
