National Parks

South Africa has 21 national parks. The parks are managed by South African National Parks (SANParks). SANParks was established in 1926 to conserve the indigenous fauna, flora, landscapes and cultural heritage of South Africa.

The national parks comprise roughly 3 700 000 hectares (37 000 km?) - about 3% of the total area of South Africa. The Kruger National Park is the largest and best known of the parks, comprising roughly 2 000 000 hectares (20 000 km?).
