Gambling activities in South Africa is overseen by the National Gambling Board (NGB) and the various provincial gambling boards. The National Gambling Board is operated under the National Gambling Act, 1996 (Act 33 of 1996) and the National Gambling Act, 2004 (Act 7 of 2004). All matters pertaining to casinos, gambling, betting and wagering is adressed in the act. In addition, it provides for promoting uniform norms and standards in relation to gambling in South Africa.

The South African gambling industry is also renowned for its code of conduct and its commitment to responsible gambling. The National Responsible Gambling Programme (NRGP) provides treatment and counselling to problem gamblers and integrates research and monitoring, public education and awareness. The National Responsible Gambling Programme is supervised by the South African Responsible Gambling Trust (SARGT).

Almost all of the casinos in South Africa are members of the Casino Association of South Africa (CASA). CASA and its members are commited to responsible gambling and have agreed to a code of conduct to reach this goal. The code of conduct adresses matters pertaining to responsible gambling, responsible advertising, underage gambling, the use of alcohol and funding for the NRGP.
